Joseph was born at Stratford, Ontario on 25 December 1922. Both parents were born in Hamilton, Ontarioand his father, who pre-deceased Joseph, had been an Insurance Agent. Joseph had one brother, Edward Stephen. He attended St Joseph’s school, Stratford 1929-1938 (High School Entrance). Stratford Collegiate 1938-1939 (Junior Matric grade 9) and then Stratford Col,(Night school 1939-1941 in shop mathematics and sheet metal drawing). He was working for C.N.R., Stratford as a mechanic from 1940 until enlistment on 1 October 1942. The sports Joseph participated in were swimming, football, baseball and hockey. |
After his initial training, Joseph embarked from Halifax on 29 April 1944 arriving U.K. and 3 PRC 8 May 1944, 24 OTU 30 May 1944, 61 Base 23 August 1944 and 420 Squadron 3 October 1944. |

Operation | Chemnitz- continuation of Operation Thunderclap. 760 aircraft. Severe icing conditions over home bases cost 9 aircraft, especially from 426 Sqn. A further 22 aircraft were lost on the operation. The centre and south of the city were badly damaged by fire. Several important factories were destroyed, including the Siegmar tank engine plant. |
